Plasma Neon: Interactive Light
Pilchuck Glass School: Session 1,
May 19th to 30th 2014
Patrick Collentine
Touch the wonder of the universe by
creating celestial light events inside a glass vessel. This course will focus exclusively on ‘plasma
neon’ an experimental hybrid of traditional neon. Plasma neon combines hot glass, vacuum
technology and high frequency radio transformers to create touch responsive
interactive light sculptures. Both
borosilicate flameworking and glassblowing will be used in this class. Class discussions will include N. Tesla,
Moholy-Nagy, Jeremijenko, Eliasson, Gysin, Gaudi and parametric architecture. We’ll conclude the session with interactive
exhibit of glowing glass sculptures for the Pilchuck Campus.
Patrick
Collentine began flameworking as a teenager at a scientific thermometer
workshop in Kiel, Germany. He received
his B.A. in Art Glass from CSU Chico where he studied with the artist Jack A. Schmidt. He lives and maintains a neon art studio in
Chico, California. His artwork was
included in the publication, 25 Years of
New Glass Review, Corning NY and his work is in the collection of the
Museum of Neon Art, Glendale, California.
